Nile: ‘The Search for the Source’

REVIEW:

Documentary CHOICE (Radio Times)

The Final part of this fascinating trilogy focusing on the world longest river turns its attention to the question that puzzled geographers for centuries: exactly what is the source of the mighty Nile? As is the current fashion with history programmes, the various quests are dramatically reconstructed and vividly brought to life.

It was during the 19th century that explorers really got their teeth into Africa. Richard Burton and John Speke Kicked it all off in 1857, when London's Royal Geographical Society decided that it was only fitting that an Englishman should discover the source. But their mission was thwarted and, by the end of the trek, although they had found a possible contender, Lake Tanganyika, the pair had fallen out. But as Africa became overrun with explorers, more lakes were discovered, leading to confusion..... An inspiring account of human tenacity. (Nuala Giblin)
